Arthritis Therapy

Arthritis is a chronic condition that is characterized by discomfort and swelling in the joints. Some of the most common areas for people to experience arthritis are in the fingers, hands, knees or neck. While arthritis is typically considered to be an affliction of the elderly, the fact is that it can occur as early as the late teenage years in some individuals. While it is certainly more common in older individuals, arthritis is a disease that is hard to understand and even categorize, as there are many different forms of it.

Many patients have reported experiencing relief from arthritis through regular participation in massage therapy. Not only does the massage help to provide a relaxing state of mind that detracts from the chronic discomfort being experienced, properly application of light pressure in certain areas can help to provide real relief from joint inflammation. Particularly in the finger, hand and wrist region, massage therapy can assist with alleviating pain as well as improving range of motion and dexterity.

Due to the nature of arthritis, it is not recommended that clients with this disorder participate in deep tissue massages. It is absolutely vital that arthritic clients make their massage therapist aware of their affliction before any actual treatment takes place, just as it is important for the client to communicate throughout the session to ensure that they are not being put through any pain.
